Colin Druce's tour de force powers Beethoven celebration in Kenilworth

...However, it was Colin Druce who took charge of the first twenty minutes of Beethoven’s Choral Fantasia, leading determinedly from the piano, something Beethoven allegedly did not do at the first performance; the composer is known to have improvised at the 1808 première. Druce gave a tour de force performance, sticking to the score. With flute, bassoon and clarinet wind section support; three cello desks distinguishing themselves, plus strong soprano delivery from Isabella Gage and more mellow tones from alto Emma Stannard, this Fantasia, with its hints of ‘Ode to Joy’, was well received as the hors d’oeuvre before the main course.

Alcester Singers 'Spring Concert'

It was exciting to hear the excellent work of the choir having been put into this performance, and it started with an ostinato of the piano and harmonium counterpart. Many parts were operatic with splendid rhythms – to get our feet tapping – with good dynamics and excellent accompaniment from Colin Druce on the piano whose sforzandos caused the gentleman sitting in front of us to leap from his seat!

He is very much behind the scenes, but our organist Colin Druce really carried our day on Saturday with his magnificent Pomp and Circumstance, Nimrod, Serenade to Music, and much more - plus a brilliant romp through the Sailor's Hornpipe for us to clap along!

For many in the audience, Colin Druce delivered a first! A first opportunity to hear his ‘Hauptwerk’ organ system, the world’s leading virtual pipe organ capable of reproducing high resolution audio. An instrument producing such astonishing clarity thrilled a ‘fascinated’ audience with Druce reproducing the sound created by the Marcussen organ from the Laurenskerk, in Rotterdam. As much as we love the All Saints’ organ, it must be said the Druce efforts are especially stimulating and adventurous.

Audience involvement reached a crescendo with Sir David Wilcock’s arrangement of ark! The Herald Angels Angels Sing, before Dunleavy brought the celebration to a close with another Trepte arrangement – Deck the Hall – with organist Colin Druce’s powerful reminder of how important his reliable support to local choirs is, and has been, for many years

Fortune favoured the brave in front of a full house at a venue where Colin Druce had not previously played the organ. That could be a very big problem for the choir and Colin. Fortunately, he is able to anticipate how to compensate for this electronic instrument’s limitations… and was confidently compensating for its impediments
